Mole assessment

Examination of moles and dermoscopic assessment when indicated.

Overview

Mole assessment considers the person's skin, the features of individual lesions, changes over time and personal risk factors together. Dermoscopic examination and follow-up are used when indicated.

Which changes are important?

New or noticeably changing lesions should be assessed, particularly those showing asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colors, growth, bleeding or a non-healing sore. A small size alone does not establish that a lesion is harmless.

Why is an annual mole examination important?

An annual mole examination provides an important opportunity to assess change over time. Regular dermoscopic review is particularly relevant for people with numerous or atypical moles or a personal or family history of melanoma. Examination may lead to annual or more frequent review. Do not wait for your annual appointment if a mole is new, growing, changing colour, bleeding or different from the others.

How is follow-up arranged?

Follow-up intervals depend on individual risk and examination findings. Sampling or removal of a lesion may be recommended when indicated.

Frequently asked questions

Does every mole need to be removed?

No. The decision is based on examination findings and dermoscopic assessment when needed.

Can a definite diagnosis be made from a photograph?

Photographs can provide information in some circumstances, but they do not always replace an in-person examination or further investigations when needed.
