What is the course of hives?
Hives cause itchy welts. An individual welt usually disappears within 24 hours, while new ones may appear elsewhere. Episodes continuing for six weeks or longer are assessed as chronic urticaria.
When is it urgent?
Hives do not always indicate a food allergy. Management follows the history and examination. Tongue or throat swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or feeling faint requires emergency assessment.
