Itch can accompany dry skin, eczema, infestations or other skin conditions. Medicines and systemic illnesses can also cause it. The absence of a visible rash does not mean assessment is unnecessary.
What does assessment cover?
The consultation covers duration, distribution, night-time symptoms, exposures, medicines and associated symptoms. Tests are selected from the history and examination. Persistent, spreading or sleep-disrupting itch warrants assessment.
